1960's - 1970's Costumes
The rockin' 1950s were followed by a swing into the 1960s. A decade filled with psychedelic prints, peace signs, gogo dancers... remembered still with '1960s fashion' and '1960s music'. The decade is described as 'a leap into the human conscience', as it spans the social awakening of equality and liberation: the rise of feminism, the gay rights movement, and the revolt of young people against the conservative norms of the 1950s era. The youth involved in the popular social aspects of the movement became known as hippies. Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Mother Teresa led a revolution of conscience. The sixties was also sparked with "all hits", the music developing from folksinger to the 'British invasion' with the Beatles, pop and soul with Elvis Presley, and rock with The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix.

These social progressive values started in the sixties developed into the 1970s, with a move into the environmentalist movement. The feminism movement, anti-war movement and civil rights movement continued into the seventies decade. The early 70s saw the rise of soft/ pop rock music with recording artists such as Elton John and Fleetwood Mac. The Godfather, Saturday Night Fever and Star Wars were huge movies of the 70s, still widely acclaimed today. Clothing styles during the 1970s were influenced by outfits seen in popular music groups and Hollywood films. Bell-bottomed pants remained popular throughout the decade, combined with flower-print and turtle necked shirts. In the latter part of the decade, this gave way to three-piece suits, in large part because of the movie Saturday Night Fever. Sideburns and beards came back into style for men, as well as the large, round Afro. Women's hairstyles went from long and straight in the first half of the decade to the feathery cut of Farrah Fawcett. Platform shoes for both men and women became popular.
